I'm Alfred, representing Te Ha o Hei from Mercury Bay Area School. I have travelled to many interesting places with LEARNZ and I'm excited to be embarking on more adventures!

I am known to be a curious chap, so don't be surprised if I get my human friends to ask tonnes of questions!

Talk soon,

Alfred

You might have seen from the photos in Andrew’s diary, that I have not joined him and the other ambassadors yet. Andrew is visiting us at school tomorrow so I will join him and the other ambassadors then.

I am looking toward to seeing Andrew again – it has been a while. It will be good to meet the other ambassadors for this field trip too.

Catch you soon,

Alfred

It was great to join Andrew and the other ambassadors today. Andrew came into the school to meet and chat with some of the students. Then we all left and did a biosecurity check at DOC. After that we got onto a boat and headed to Ahuahu. It was a bit of a rough ride!

So, we are here on the island and it is awesome. I can’t wait to have a good look around over the next couple of days. I am interested in learning more about the early inhabitants of Ahuahu through the work of archaeology.

Catch you soon,

Alfred

I learned a lot today about archaeology and what it can tell us about early life on Ahuahu. One place we visited was Matakawau. It is also known as Stingray Point Pā. Louise showed us how archaeologists look for clues in the landscape. These clues show archaeologists how people have changed the land and possible reasons why. We saw old postholes, kūmara pits, and ditches which were dug for defence.

Once you have all these clues you can start to piece them all together. You then get a picture of what life on the pā may have been like and the different activities that happened. Very interesting!

It has been another valuable adventure on the LEARNZ Ahuahu field trip. I hope you have all enjoyed learning about this island as much as I have.

Today we went to a part of the island called Peach Grove. It is a very scenic part of the island. There are lots of huge old pōhutukawa trees there which are my most favourite trees. Have any of you been to Peach Grove bay? If you haven’t, you should try and get there sometime.

I think Andrew is going to drop me off on his way home tomorrow. I look forward to seeing you all again soon!
