Meet Garth Oakden

Job: 

Whitewater Rafting Fishing Adventure – guide, company owner.

Job description: 

My job is taking people from all over the world on adventure trips. Looking after and training staff, marketing and organising adventure trips that include rafting, fishing, mountain biking, kayaking, and caving.

Work background: 

I have been self employed since 1991 with Tongariro River Rafting. Prior to that I worked as a casual farm hand in the Manawatu.

Favourite part of job: 

Spending time with the people that we get to meet from all over the world and sharing with them the magnificant central North Island that we call home.

Least favourite part of job: 

Washing wetsuits!

Qualifications: 

Senior grade 5 rafting guide, skills active roving assessor for rafting.

Interests outside work: 

Anything in the outdoors from the skiing in the mountains, hunting, game bird shooting to the sailing at sea. The Blue Duck protection programme that we have put in place on the Tongariro is a particular passion of mine. It has been wonderful to put something back into the environment that I have spent so much of my adult life working in.
