Ambassador Kermit

Kia ora

My name is Kermit and I have been longing for an adventure and to get back to water. I am a bit daunted by the ocean, preferring a pond, so will need special looking after. I do want to "hop" to the top of the rigging if I can!

See you onboard,

Kermit.

Monday 19 February

Kia ora,

I made it to Dunedin just in time to meet Shelley and the other ambassadors before we flew to Auckland to begin our sailing adventure. We had a great flight north with only a few bumps and some good views of the mountains.

I was so excited to board the Spirit of New Zealand ship in Auckland harbour. It was so hot that I struggled to sleep during my first night on the boat. It was so good to finally be on our way and sail away from Auckland. I wonder what adventures we will have?

Bye for now,

Kermit.

Tuesday 20 February

Kia ora,

We have been keeping an eye on the weather forecast as ex-cyclone Gita approaches. Luckily Gita has tracked south east and won’t affect us too much. The wind did increase this afternoon though and it was great fun crashing through waves as we sailed in Tamaki Strait.

Tomorrow we are hoping to learn how to sail a smaller boat called a luger. I can’t wait.

See you in the morning,

Kermit.

Wednesday 21 February

Tēnā koutou,

It was another fantastic day on the Inspiration Voyage. We spent the morning back on land at Waiheke Island. It was hard work paddling the inflatable rafts but with a bit of team work we made it to shore.

Back on the Spirit we learned about which sails to set to make the most of different strengths of wind and I helped the cook prepare a scrummy meal. Food is really important on any outdoor adventure and life at sea seems to be giving me a healthy appetite.

Tomorrow I am hoping to climb the mast.

Wish me luck,

Kermit.

Thursday 22 February

Kia ora,

I have been looking forward to this day all trip. One of my goals for the voyage was to climb the mast and it was so exciting. At first, I felt really scared but as I got used to climbing I felt safe knowing that I wasn’t going to fall. The view from the top of the mast was fantastic. You could see out across Waiheke Island and the Hauraki Gulf.

We also went sailing in a little boat called a lugger.

I am now exhausted and looking forward to getting home to share more of my adventure with all my classmates.

See you soon,

Kermit.
