Meet Ivy Urquhart

Job:

Art Department Assistant for the Great War Exhibition.

Job description:

I help to coordinate the art department for the exhibition from our office in the former Dominion Museum building.

Work background:

Last year I graduated with a Bachelor of Design: for stage and screen from Toi Whakaari: New Zealand National Drama School. During my time studying I worked on a variety of different projects including designing the set and costumes for a play called Dry Swimming which was devised with a youth theatre company in Utrecht, The Netherlands. I also worked as an art department intern on the NZ film “Shopping”.

Favourite part of job:

I have the opportunity to work alongside so many different people, and help to bring this amazing project to life. The ability of the people I’m working with constantly amazes me. When you see them start with a block of polyurethane, and end with a tank engine, or make plastic and cardboard tubes look like rusty metal pipes - that’s impressive.

Least favourite part of job:

Nothing. There is never a dull moment in this job.

What I am working on now:

I’m working out how much everything we are putting into the exhibition weighs. That way we know that the infrastructure of the museum will be able to hold the weight of the exhibition. I never thought that cobblestones could be so heavy, but when you have 75 square metres of them it quickly adds up.

Qualifications:

Bachelor of Design: for stage and screen from Toi Whakaari: New Zealand National Drama School.

Interests outside work:

I love model making and photography. When I need to relax, I cook.
