Kia ora everyone

I'm Buzzbee and I'm a dedicated adventurer! I have been to Antarctica and Stewart Island and all round Milford and Doubtful Sound. I love travelling and the LEARNZ trips are my favourite! I am passionate about the environment and helping others. My home at Spring Creek School is a beautiful spot and I like teaching others about our school's Cornerstone Values and how to look after the world around us.

Catch you soon,

Well I'm buzzing with excitement now that we have started the field trip. Tomorrow we will actually go into Redvale Landfill, New Zealand's largest landfill.

Today our mission was to fly from Kerikeri to Auckland, and then travel by car to Albany. It was mission completion, and we even got to see some local landmarks along the way. You can see in today's picture that I am inside North Harbour QBE Stadium. There are a lot of football, rugby and rugby league matches played here. Andrew said he once watch the Kiwis play the Kangaroos in an ANZAC test match here - that would be pretty cool! Anyway, it was neat being able to have a bit of a walk around the field - it must be exciting playing a sports match in front of a big crowd in a stadium like this.

Catch you tomorrow,

Firstly, let me say how awesome I thought you all were on this morning’s web conference. Tim really liked your questions and I think it started a conversation that got a lot of people thinking about their decisions when it comes to recycling, and about the things we buy in the first place.

Andrew showed me the email Mrs Dunick sent him that explained the idea you have had for a plastic free day. I think that’s a great idea and will get everyone thinking about waste, recycling, and responsible buying.

I learned a lot today on the field trip. You might think that a landfill would be smelly, but overall it isn’t too bad. One reason for this is that all the rubbish is covered with soil, so the smell can’t escape. Under the soil the plant and animal waste, known as organic waste, rots. When it rots it makes a gas called methane.

The cool part is how this gas is sucked out and used to make electricity. All around the landfill are wells. The wells are connected to pipes which take the landfill gas to a place where it is used as fuel to run generators. The generators then make electricity.

Looking forward to more great learning tomorrow,

It has been an awesome field trip this week. I have enjoyed getting to know Andrew, Tim, and the other field trip ambassadors. The highlight for me today was having a look around one of the new electric waste vehicles. It’s amazing to think these trucks can be powered by waste! The electric motor is very quiet. There are also no stinky diesel fumes.

I’ll see you all next week and tell you more about my field trip experiences!
