Meet Chrissy Marshall

Job:

Research Associate - Pipfruit Breeding Team.

<- Homepage: Our Primary Industries: Unpacking the apple story

Job description:

Provide technical support for the pipfruit breeding team, especially the apple and pear programmes.

Work background:

Science teacher and health career promoter – Kia ora Hauora Programme.

Favourite part of job:

Pollination, when we cross pollen from selected varieties onto flowers of desired mother trees.

Least favourite part of job:

Being stuck inside for too long during winter, like the variety of having different tasks, both inside and outside.

What I am working on now:

Fruit tasting assessments, eating apples that have been in storage for 10 weeks to see if they taste any good for further study.

A quick story about a job well done:

With the help from our casual workers just completed seed sowing of 75,000 apple seeds.

A (humorous) story about a job that went badly and what you learned:

I forgot to turn off the watering system in the glasshouse on a day when assessments were being done. Everyone had to wear gumboots and sludge around in a slippery room while measuring plants. I learnt to make sure the watering is OFF before doing any glasshouse work, otherwise it can be very messy and slow work.

Qualifications:

Masters of Science (Genetics).

Interests outside work:

Kapa haka and indoor netball.
