Workshop Mechanic

Job description:

Doing preventative maintenance, services and attending break downs, ordering parts, doing fabrication & welding work on the plants.

Work background:

Worked at Emperor Goldmines in Fiji for 7 years and worked for Waste Management for 9 years, starting in 2008.

Favourite part of job:

Doing diagnostics. Trouble shooting, doing some innovative work to make job easier, less down time, safer & more productivity.

Least favourite part of job:

When the machines breakdown in the cell surrounded by all sorts of rubbish, dusty environments, smell from rubbish and bad weather conditions.

What I am working on now:

Fabricating the pedestal (brace) for the big pump which is mounted on the float and also removed the dipper ram on the digger 460B.

A quick story about a job well done:

Fabricated the platform for big generator so it’s easy to move around with the loader. Redesign the filter cleaning system on two odour suppression units for less down time.

A (humorous) story about a job that went badly and what you learned:

A 50 ton truck was bogged down accidentally – the tow strop was hooked on the grab handle and ripped the battery box and side panel off the loader – lack of supervision and communication.

  • Heavy Vehicle Mechanic and did short courses

Interests outside work:

Fishing, having get-togethers with friends, gardening, playing soccer.
