About this trip

During this field trip you will follow the journey of the world's tastiest apples from a Hawke's Bay orchard to the shopping baskets of consumers all around the world. You will see how scientists selectively breed apples and follow the production process from the orchard right through to export. You will investigate the role of research and technology and look at how apple growers are addressing challenges such as managing pests and diseases and the impacts of climate change.

Hawke's Bay is a traditional "fruit basket" area of New Zealand, on the east coast of the North Island. The soils and climate of Hawke's Bay are suitable for growing apples and for many other forms of agriculture. Hawke's Bay also has a lot of irrigated flat land and infrastructure such as processing and packaging plants. It has its own port at Napier for exporting produce.

This online field trip supports a STEAM-based, cross curricular approach to teaching and learning. Participation encourages curiosity, citizen-science and student inquiry. Access the glossary and the Photo Gallery.
