Kia ora everyone.

My name is Fantasia. I am new to travelling outside of Room 16 - this is my first adventure.

I like to read, and hang out with her other unicorn friends. I use the virtues of honesty, zeal and wonder. I can be shy but will open up when I feel I can trust you.

Looking forward to the field trip!

Today we flew from Kerikeri to Auckland. Then we drove in a rental car from Auckland to Whitianga. It was raining a lot in Kerikeri this morning. Andrew was worried that our flight might be delayed because of the weather. He was very pleased when the plane appeared through the cloudy skies and landed at the airport!

It was a lot sunnier in Auckland. It took us nearly three hours to drive from Auckland to Whitianga. It’s cool here in Whitianga. We are staying near the beach and we went for a walk along it when we got here. Nice!

Catch you tomorrow,

It was a rather full-on day today. First, we had the web conference. Then we went to Mercury Bay Area School. While we were there, we had Alfred join us. He’s cool and has been on a few LEARNZ field trips before. Then we went to the DOC office for a biosecurity check. Finally, we got on a boat and made our way to Ahuahu. Phew!

I felt a bit sick on the boat journey here. It was a bouncy boat ride at times! It felt good to be on dry land again when we got to the island. Now we are at the place called the shearers' quarters. The fire is on and it’s nice and cosy. I will have a good sleep and be ready for another busy day tomorrow.

Talk then,

Today we visited some parts of the island where there have been excavations. Excavations are when archaeologists look for things that have been left behind by people. These are called artefacts. They can show how people lived in the area and the different things they used or ate to survive. They also look for signs of how people changed parts of the land. This can show them things like where a building might have been, or where gardening took lace, or where digging might have happened. This can all show how people behaved in the past and what life might have been like.

I have had an amazing field trip experience. I hope you have all enjoyed the field trip too. Today we learned about some nasty weeds on Ahuahu called moth plant that can spread their seeds in the wind. This could be bad for nearby islands.

My favourite place during our time here has been Coralie Bay. Luckily, we got to spend some of the morning here and some of the afternoon.

I have learned so much this week I don’t think it can all fit in my little head! Just as well there are some videos on the field trip website I can watch when I get back to school so I can remember all that I have learned.

See you next week!
