Managing the Taupō Fishery
Listen:

Many people visit the Lake Taupō area every year.

A successful industry

Taupō’s waterways attract lots of tourists. Looking after these freshwater environments is important for the many local businesses that make money from visitors to the area. Some of the many freshwater based activities in the Taupō region are:

  • jetboating
  • whitewater rafting
  • kayaking
  • parasailing
  • bungy jumping
  • fishing.

The Taupō fishery

The Taupō fishery is a wild fishery. This means it does not need hatchery reared fish to be released for anglers to catch. The Taupō environment has everything needed for healthy, wild trout. It has cool, clear water, plenty of food and plenty of spawning habitat.
