Meet Matt Ammunson Fyall - Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāti Porou, Te Arawa

Job:

Business liaison at Te Wharewaka o Pōneke.

Job description:

<- Homepage: Matariki and navigation from Kupe to Cook to Today

My job is to grow our business by creating relationships with organisations like schools and educational groups, tourism companies like Weta and Te Papa and companies that bring people to Wellington who want to hear the stories of the local iwi Te Ātiawa/Taranaki Whānui.

Work background:

I previously worked at Parliament, but while I studied, I ran an afterschool care center and holiday programs (similar environment!).

Favourite part of job:

Paddling in the waka sharing the kōrero of the iwi and showing people how awesome Te Whanganui-a-Tara/Wellington Harbour is.

Least favourite part of job:

Paddling in the cold.

What I am working on now:

I just came back from a buyers/sellers conference, so finishing up all my follow-ups (exciting!) but I’m helping to plan a big renovation of one of our spaces which is actually really exciting! Watch this space!!

A quick story about a job well done:

I’ve often had people shed a couple of tears when I take tours… I think that’s a good thing, that I can be that moving. Not because I bore people to tears when I talk lol.

A (humorous) story about a job that went badly and what you learned:

A colleague and I were out running an errand. We pulled in behind a taxi a few meters away from a red light. We sat there for a good 10 minutes before we realised we were in a taxi stand, not the traffic queue.

Qualifications:

BA Political Science, Diploma Māoritanga (VUW).

Interests outside work:

Waka Ama, Waka Kaupapa.
