I am Spud from St Heliers School, a full primary school in Auckland. I'm proud to wear my school jumper with the SHS logo. This will be an interesting field trip to find out more about where our waste goes and what happens at Redvale Landfill.

Today we flew from Kerikeri to Auckland. Then we drove to Albany, where we are staying this week for the field trip. Andrew took us for a quick look at Redvale Landfill where the field trip will be based. We only went to the gate, but it was good to get a feel for where we'll be spending most of the week as we learn about where our waste goes and what is done with it.

It was good to finally get away and start the field trip. I hope you're looking forward to it as much as I am!

I had an awesome and interesting day today. It was great to have a tour of the landfill with Tim Brake. It’s a massive place – hard to believe that it will be filled up within 10 years. Boy, we sure do produce a lot of waste!

In the photo you can see me standing near the weigh bridge. This is where all the trucks are weighed before they come into the landfill. They are then weighed after emptying their load so Waste Management know exactly how much rubbish they brought in. I found out that around 350 trucks come in and out of the landfill every day! You might think that sounds like a load of rubbish. You’re right, it is!

What an interesting time we had today. We learnt about how landfill gas called methane gets turned into electricity. The methane is used as a fuel for a generator, which is an engine that makes electricity. Redvale Landfill has 12 generators now and will soon have two more. I think it is so good that the gas is being used for something rather than just being wasted.

I am really looking forward to seeing the new electric waste truck tomorrow!

Talk then,

Today was the last day of the field trip. I can’t believe how fast time has gone! I have learned so much and I hope you all have too. Today we met an electric truck, an eggplant grower, and some students from Dairy Flat School. We also learned about odour neutralising spray. This is spray that basically kills any smell leaving the landfill, so the neighbours don’t smell anything.

Looking forward to seeing you all again next week!
