<-- Homepage What's the Plan, Stan? Get ready for an emergency

Kia ora koutou,

I am Ti Aki from St Joseph's Catholic School in Ōpōtiki. I love to learn and am keen to feel safe during a natural hazard emergency. I know I can fly but that may not be the safest thing to do. I don’t like being scared because I don’t know what to do. I flew to Hawke’s Bay to learn about apples and even pecked a few...yummy! My favorite part of the school day is when all the children come to school in the morning because I miss them when they all go home.

Kia ora everyone

It was really wet and windy today in the Bay of Plenty area/Waiariki. Luckily it didn’t rain all the time so Andrew and the team were able to film today’s videos which you can see on the Videos page or in the Google Earth Tour.

Today was all about the science of tsunami, such as what causes them and what the impacts of one might be. When we know about tsunami science we can better prepare for their impacts. I hope you all know where the tsunami escape route is at school or home and where the evacuation zones are.

I hope you are enjoying the field trip as much as I am. Today we went to Edgecumbe. There was a big earthquake in Edgecumbe in 1987. That was before any of you students were born. It caused a lot of damage and some people were injured. Luckily nobody died.

A scientist called Brad took us to a place where the faultline runs right through the middle of a road. Of course the road is all fixed now but you can still see it there and in the surrounding farmland where the land rose along the fault. It was cool to see!

Talk again tomorrow after ShakeOut,

Kia ora everyone

I have had such a great time on the field trip this week. ShakeOut was a great experience! I’m quite tired from the adventures and learning along the way. But it has all been very worthwhile. I hope you have gained a lot from the experience too.

Hopefully, I will have a chance to go on another field trip in the future. In the meantime, I need to think about all that I have learned this week so that I can make sure I am prepared and safe during an emergency – you never know when it might happen.

See you all next week!
