Andrew the LEARNZ Field Trip Teacher

Job:

I am the field trip teacher for the LEARNZ primary programme.

Job description:

During each school term I organise and run virtual field trips for classes throughout New Zealand. We go on trips to study New Zealand's biodiversity and natural environment. Each field trip has background pages so that everyone knows a little about where we're going and what we are going to see. I help teachers get ready with curriculum and classroom ideas.

Out in the field I work with the Department of Conservation staff and other experts. We talk with schools during live audioconferences. I write a daily diary which is posted each night on the web along with still and video images. I take class ambassadors with me and together we explore some of New Zealand's special places.

Work background:

I have taught mainly at the upper levels within the primary sector. Most recently I worked as a teaching Deputy Principal. I became a LEARNZ field trip teacher in 2009.

Favourite part of job:

I enjoy catching up with people from places I have visited before. I also love exploring parts of Aotearoa that I have not been to yet, and sharing my discoveries with all of you!

Least favourite part of job:

Long periods of time between field trips as that usually means long periods of time stuck at my desk.

Qualifications:

I have a Bachelor of Sport and Recreation, Diploma of Teaching and a Graduate Diploma of Education Management.

Interests outside work:

Fishing and the outdoors, cooking, gym, family and friends (my three daughters keep me busy!)
