First Time International Traveller

Here's what happens at Christchurch International Airport when you go on an international flight (flights overseas).

Check-in

Take all your luggage and travel papers to a check-in counter that shows your airline, flight number and destination (where you are going). You will be given a seat number and your luggage will be sent to the aircraft.

Customs and security

You then go through Customs who will check your travel documents. Security screening is straight after Customs. Security screening makes sure you are not carrying anything dangerous and that you are following the hand luggage limits.

Proceed to your gate

After customs and security you will find your gate in the International Departures lounge. Your departure gate and time will be printed on your boarding pass.

Board flight

Present your boarding pass to the assistant at the gate when you have been called to board. Hold on to your boarding pass to show to the cabin crew on-board. They will show you to your seat.

Departing flight

When you arrive at your destination you will be told where to collect your luggage. You will also need to go through Customs.

Interview: As a class, come up with some questions to ask someone who often travels overseas. Try to find someone to interview and answer your questions.
