Meet Lachlan Falconer

Job:

Air Traffic Controller

Job description:

I ensure that aircraft using the airport and its surrounding airspace remain safe and pilots get to go where they wish to go.

Work background:

I’ve been a controller for more than 15 years and worked at a number of airports around New Zealand.

Favourite part of job:

When it’s busy and you know the pilots really appreciate the job you’re doing.

Least favourite part of job:

Night Shifts; there is always someone here 24/7.

What I am working on now:

I’m learning a new role in the tower at present.

A quick story about a job well done:

On the odd occasion, when a pilot is in need of assistance, it’s good to be able to assist them to ensure they have a safe journey and at the end of the day everyone gets to go home.

A (humorous) story about a job that went badly and what you learned:

Some days, pilots don’t always do as they are told. This has led to planes going flying the wrong way, or trying to land in places they aren’t meant to. I now always keep a watchful lookout.

Qualifications:

Air traffic Control License and a Degree in Aviation Management.

Interests outside work:

I enjoy flying vintage aircraft.
