Here's what happens at Christchurch International Airport when you go on an international flight (flights overseas).
Check-in
Take all your luggage and travel papers, including your passport, to a check-in counter that displays your airline, flight number and destination. The airline staff member will give you a seat number and send any luggage you have to the aircraft.
This is a good time to check any liquids, aerosols and gels (LAGs) you might be carrying. Here are the rules for those: http://www.avsec.govt.nz/travellers/dangerous-goods/.
Customs and security
Before you go through Departures, you go through Customs who will check your travel documents. Security screening is straight after Customs. Security screening makes sure you are not carrying any dangerous items and that you are following the hand luggage limits.
Proceed to your gate
Once through Departures you will find your gate within the International Departures lounge. Your departure gate and time will be printed on your boarding pass.
Board flight
Once you have been called to board, you present your boarding pass to the assistant at the gate. Hold on to your boarding pass to show to the cabin crew on-board who will show you to your seat.
Departing flight
Once you have arrived at your destination you will be told where to collect your luggage. You will also need to go through Customs.
