Meet Ian Faulkner

Job:

Assistant Manager Fire and Airside Operations

Job description:

As the Deputy Fire Chief, I generally oversee the Airport Fire Station wild life management programme and Airport Fire Training Officer.

Work background:

I have been in my current role for two months. I started as a fireman 30 years ago at Dunedin Airport and progressed up through the ranks here at Christchurch Airport.

Favourite part of job:

Being part of an exciting working environment. The airport is the gateway to our city and what we do and how we do it gives impressions to users of the airport that should last a long time. It feels good to be a part of that.

Least favourite part of job:

At the moment, none.

What I am working on now:

A wide variety of things, organising and taking training courses, dealing with to day running of the Airport Fire Station and wild life management.

A quick story about a job well done:

Assisting Police with a hi-jacked aircraft.

A (humorous) story about a job that went badly and what you learned:

Chasing a deer that had escaped, round and round the airport. It eventually jumped a fence and disappeared never to be seen again. I learned not to chase wild animals.

Qualifications:
  • Graduate Diploma in Emergency Management (Massey)
  • New Zealand Certificates in Building (from a former life)
Interests outside work:

Interests outside work: Running, reading, renovating our 1905 villa, spending time with my family.
