Environment Manager
It is my job to ensure that our activities at the airport do not adversely affect the environment around us, particularly the drinking water aquifer that lies beneath us. I work with our operators and tenants on pollution prevention, stormwater management and compliance, and promote sustainability and waste minimisation for the airport as a whole.
Before starting at CIAL I worked at a private consultancy company and the regional council, Environment Canterbury. In both jobs I dealt with urban waterways and stormwater.
The variety. It is a great mix of topics, and a good balance of inside and outside work.
Conflict – having to tell someone off who ignore the rules and regulations.
Just about to return to work from maternity leave.
A rental car tenant operating at the airport experienced an oil spill and despite having undergone desktop training about cleaning up a spill the staff were still running around like headless chooks when it occurred. Once it was cleaned up it occurred to me that practical training would be more effective, so we since included practical training in the module.
A consultant and I decided to undertake a 24 hour waste audit of all terminal rubbish. It was an enormous task and we found all sorts of interesting things including bottles of wine, money and underwear. We learned that we should have more manpower to help sort all of the waste!
