Hello everyone, tēnā koutou,

I am Eddy, Andrew's LEARNZ ambassador. I go on all the trips with Andrew and help look after the other ambassadors from your schools.

I really love LEARNZ field trips about New Zealand's special and interesting places. I am looking forward to discovering more about Kate Valley Landfill!

Best,

Eddy

Monday 4 November

Kia ora e te whānau,

It didn't seem to take too long at all to arrive in Christchurch today. It is amazing that you can travel 1,300 kilometres in only four hours.

We had a whole row of seats to ourselves for the flight from Auckland to Christchurch. They were really comfortable too. We were given a Cookie Time cookie and a cup of tea to dunk it in - yum!

Eddy

Tuesday 5 November

Kia ora e te whānau,

Today was fun. Us ambassadors got to ride in one of the big CWS trucks as it took two huge loads of rubbish to the Kate Valley landfill. I was amazed at how many buttons, dials, gadgets and mirrors there were inside and outside the truck. I would be all wings and legs trying to drive one of these big rigs, although I'd have to work on seeing over the steering wheel to start! There was also a massive digger and a bulldozer at the landfill. They were spreading the rubbish around and covering it all with soil. Now these looked like fun machines to operate!

Looking forward to another cool day tomorrow.

Best,

Eddy

Wednesday 6 November

Kia ora e te whānau,

Today we went back into the landfill to talk more about what happens to waste. There were some parts that smelled a bit but overall it wasn't too bad. That's because all the rubbish is covered with soil at the end of each day so the smell can’t escape. Under the soil the plant and animal waste, known as organic waste, rots. When it rots it makes a gas called methane. It will be really interesting to see tomorrow how the gas is used to make electricity.

Best,

Eddy

Thursday 7 November

Kia ora e te whānau,

I can't believe the end of the field trip has come around so quickly. I think time has gone quickly because I have had some other ambassadors to share the experience with. We have all had a fun time learning about Kate Valley - a modern, engineered landfill. I wonder what questions you still have about waste. And I wonder what action you might take now that you have been a part of the field trip.

Best,

Eddy
