Share your favourite awa

Send us an image of the awa near you. Ensure there are no people in your image and always stay safe near water.

Remember - Take only photos, leave only footprints.

We have a couple of spot prizes to give away for photos shared by 8 October 2021.

Please tell us

  • The name of your awa
  • Where it is
  • Why it is important to you.

You could also tell us:

  • What is your vision for the health of your awa?
  • How could you be a kaitiaki* for your awa?

*Kaitiaki comes from the word Kaitiakitanga which can be described as guardianship and protection.

Kaitiakitanga is typically a collaborative effort but can start with individual actions such as:

  • learning about a local awa, including its cultural significance
  • considering how your actions impact on awa
  • exploring opportunities to participate in any current restoration work
  • contacting a local council if you think there is a need for restoration work to happen.

For example, entries can be uploaded onto a YouTube account with the privacy option on ‘Public'. Or send a link to a file in your school Google drive, set it to ‘Anyone with a link’, as ‘Viewer’. Please do not send in large source files.

Make sure you provide us with your first name, year group and the name of your school in your email.
