Meet Hannah Coote

Job:

Aquaculture technician at SpatNZ.

Job description:

Grow and care for Greenshell mussel larvae.

Favourite part of job:

Being able to care for live animals while ensuring they continue to thrive. When Greenshell mussels are larvae they are excellent swimmers and are very exciting to be able to watch under the microscope buzzing around in the water. SpatNZ is such a fantastic environment to be able to work in surrounded by wonderful people.

What I am working on now:

We are constantly trying to improve our methods of larval rearing and continue to produce innovations to advance the Greenshell mussel industry.

A quick story about a job well done:

After every successful batch of growing our mussel larvae into spat and getting to see them transported out to the mussel farms in the sea, gives me great joy and pride knowing we have successfully done our job. Especially knowing that not every larval batch will be able to survive and make it through.

Qualifications:

Diploma in Aquaculture and Fisheries Management.

Interests outside work:

I grew up on D’urville Island in the Marlborough Sounds so enjoy being able to get back there whenever I can to go fishing, hunting and tramping. I also have a dog that I love taking for fun adventures in the outdoors when I’m not working.
