Meet Tony Evans

Job:

Team Leader Locomotive Engineers.

Job description:

Manage a team of Locomotive Engineers to ensure that they are doing their job to standard. Ensure that they are fit for duty and are fully compliant to do their job.

Work background:

Started in 1981 in various jobs, transferred over to Loco in 1987 and have been a Locomotive Engineer based in Wellington for the past 30 years.

Favourite part of job:

Being my own boss.

Least favourite part of job:

Having to write reports when something goes wrong.

What I am working on now:

Project with a sleep study to see how well Locomotive Engineers handle shiftwork.

A quick story about a job well done:

Stepping up to fill a job when there was no one available and the only other choice was to cancel that train.

A (humorous) story about a job that went badly and what you learned:

Back in the 1980s we used to service the locos when they came off a train. Part of the job was to fill them up with diesel. They are supposed to have an automatic shut off . We went away to do another job and came back to see the fuel bay flooded. It took us a long time to clear up and explain what had happened. If we had been there we would have been able to stop the flooding straight away.

Qualifications:

Locomotive Engineer 1st Grade. Passenger and Freight Certified. Team Leader.

Interests outside work:

DIY. Helping daughter with her horse. Being a dad.
